How to sign a PDF, step by step
- Create your signature on the left: type your name in a handwriting font, draw it, or upload a photo of your pen signature.
- Choose the PDF. It opens on the last page, where signature lines usually are.
- Press Place signature and drag it onto the line. Use the size slider to match the line length.
- Press Add today's date if the form has a date box, and drag it into place.
- Repeat on other pages if you need to initial them, then press Download signed PDF.
Other ways to sign a PDF
Adobe Acrobat Reader (free): open the PDF, choose Fill & Sign, then Sign yourself. You can draw, type, or use an image, so a transparent PNG from our background remover works well there.
macOS Preview: open the PDF, click the Markup toolbar, then Sign. Preview can capture your signature with the trackpad or the camera.
Certificate-based signing: some government and banking forms ask for a cryptographic digital signature. That proves identity with a certificate, not a picture of your handwriting. Our electronic vs digital signature explainer shows the difference.
Signing PDF questions
How do I sign a PDF online for free?
Create your signature (type, draw or upload), open your PDF, press Place signature and drag it onto the signature line. Resize it with the slider, add the date if needed, and press Download signed PDF. There is no account and no watermark.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is opened, displayed and rewritten entirely in your browser using the open-source PDF.js and pdf-lib libraries. It never leaves your device, which is why it works even with confidential contracts.
Is signing a PDF this way legally binding?
Adding an image of your signature is an electronic signature. Under the US ESIGN Act and UETA and the EU eIDAS regulation, electronic signatures are generally binding for ordinary contracts when you intend to sign. It is not a certificate-based digital signature, so if a form requires a “digitally signed” PDF with a certificate, use a tool that supports certificates, such as Adobe Acrobat.
How do I sign a PDF on iPhone or Android?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, choose Draw and sign with your finger, then choose the PDF from Files or Downloads. Place the signature and download; the signed PDF is saved to your Files or Downloads folder.
Can I sign multiple pages?
Yes. Switch the page selector and press Place signature again for each page. Every placed signature and date is written into the final PDF.
Can I sign a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password first (for example by printing to PDF from a viewer where you have the password), then open the unlocked copy here.
